Best Birthday Gift I Gave Myself Ever! Financial Freedom! Whoo hooo! Before you think I won the lottery or struck it rich in an oil well, let me explain.
Best Birthday Gift Ever
I just finished Penny Pinchin’ Mom’s Financial Reboot Course. I am still working and raising a family, but I am no longer chasing my credit cards. Not only do I have a stick-to-able financial plan, thanks to the Financial Reboot Course — by February 15, 2017 I will be out of credit card debt. How is that for the best birthday Gift ever.
Chasing that credit card is like chasing the Unavailable Lover
Just One More Day — Just stay a little below the limit and it will be fine
One More Phone Call — So the payment is a little late. You still want me right, ( At a cost of $30-35 dollars)
You Want More of My Time — Yes, but I am already working overtime to satisfy you
I Can’t Live without You — We know, just pay the minimum and we will be together forever
Uggh!! The lies we tell ourselves to keep that little piece of plastic happy. I will just work overtime. Next month will be better. When is that tax refund going to get here!
What Your Credit Card Whispers in Your Ear
Convenience (cash is messy)
Rewards (cash back, airline miles, store credit and gifts)
Spending More Than You Have
Financing Large Purchases
Easy Tracking of Purchases
Convenience
In an almost cashless society it feels troublesome and silly to carry cash. Our cell phones cases come with a credit card slot for a reason. That is just it! The emotional attachment to a credit card is almost void. Cash on there other hand has real meaning. Every time we hand over cash, we can think, I worked 2 hours to afford to buy something with that $20. More mess in this case means less stress when the credit card bill arrives.
Rewards
How many of you pay off your credit card bills when they are due? If you do, please take a bow; that is awesome! But for the over 45% that do not, Tracie from Penny Pinchin Mom has this to say:
If you’re exceeding your budget – overspending on cards and incurring interest charges because of it — you really aren’t earning free perks so much as you are paying for them. Tracie from Penny Pinchin’ Mom
Spending More Than You Have
If you only have $100 in cash that is all you can spend. At the school book fair my kids are always surprised when a $9.99 book can’t be purchased with $10. Tax! Just the same for those with credit cards. If your budget for shoes is $100, but this really cute pair is priced at $110, with a credit card you can fudge a little. I promise to pay it back later. You know later, when the tax return shows up.
Financing Large Purchases
This one is tricky. With my spa business, I did finance some large purchases on a 0% credit card and only paid $69 for the life of a $5000 loan. I won in that situation but that is rare.
It was a large risk that kept me up at night. Unlike a true bank loan I did not have a regular payment to make each month. Self discipline would dictate that I did make a reasonable payment each month, but life happens right? Wrong! The second Best Valentine’s Day Gift I gave myself was to get rid of all the unsecured debt.
Easy Tracking of Finances
What a huge lie I was telling myself. Yes the credit card does track your spending after the fact. How many of you have sat down with your credit card bill and thought “really, did I really spend that much on that?”
What about an app that tracks it before you spend it? Proactive is just that; check it out here! Or a check book register with a running balance, or a debit card that you check on line before you purchase — or even better just plain old pen and paper.
The Best Birthday Day Gift I gave myself was giving up on the unsecured credit card debt and doing the dirty work of setting up a budget in cash.
