The simplest bread recipe ever comes from the man section of an old stained church cook book. In fact, this simple and cheap bread was listed right after cream pies under the “Man” section of the cookbook. It calls for 2 1/4 cups of any kind of liquid, water, milk or pot liquor.
I have included some affiliate links to help with finding products used.(More info on disclosure page.)
6 Ingredients in the Simplest Bread Recipe
1 package dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons
2 1/4 cups warm water, milk, pot liqueur ( warm to the touch)
3 tablespoons sugar, honey, molasses ( something for the yeast to eat)
1 tablespoon salt (helps it rise)
2 tablespoons oil
5-6 cups flour ( until the dough feels smooth and elastic)
Hey I had to look up pot liquor too.
It is any kind of watery broth left in a pot after boiling vegetables. Using pot liqueur makes this a green recycle reuse health nut recipe (except it really does use gluten).
This recipe combines 6 super cheap ingredients and a few hours of you time.
Time is really not an issue as you are involved with the bread for about 1/2 hour the rest of the time the ‘yeasty beasties’ work by themselves. I have not tried this in the bread machine but I bet it would work fine.
Seriously, all you do is measure the ingredients, dump them into the handy kitchen aid with a dough hook, turn it on to mix and then cover with clean dish towel. Place in a warm place for about 1.5 hours while it rises.
You can knead on a board if you want, but it is not necessary.
Go do something while is rises like read another blog post or do laundry. (Read the post, but if you must do laundry watch our thejoyousfamily.com youtube so you are not bored).
Come back punch the dough down. You can knead on a board if you want, but it is not necessary. Then shape it into 2 loaves, place in two grease bread pans and cover with dish towel. The second rise is only 45 minutes so whatever you choose to do make it quick. Why not pop in a Focus T-25 workout to combat all the bread and butter you will eat?
Simply put the bread in the oven at 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. If you love butter but hate it when it is hard try a butter bell. We just got one and have fallen in love!!
Now here is the really cool part, your family will be astounded as they walk in from work or school to the smell of fresh bread. The simplest bread recipe ever will make you a rock star.
