Step 12: Only the Beginning of Your Journey to Freedom

Pain normally starts most people on the 12 Step Path.  There is no light, no perception of the end when we start, only promises from others.   At the beginning, it is hard to imagine the 12 Simple Steps will start you on a journey to freedom.

Striving to Thriving

Dealing with addictions and co-dependencies as a way of life, leaves us without concrete answers.  We try this, run to that, buy an experience, go on vacation, change jobs, or change spouses trying to find meaning in life.

Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning and concentration camp survivor, offers this:

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
Frankl felt that meaning came from devoting yourself to something greater than yourself–a higher power, a cause, a person. Moving away from blaming, shaming and dependence on another’s actions to the act of finding for yourself your purpose in life. Working Step 12 is the starting place for deeper exploration into your divine calling in this life.
sand and ski as part of the journey to freedom.
God speaks to us in Jeremiah 29. It was during a time of exile when the Jews were not thriving.  At best, they were struggling to believe that God was for them.
God Plans:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.  vs. 11
Your Part:
“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity”. vs. 12-13
Remember Step 1–the unmanageability of our lives brought us to the place of surrendering to God.  The growth process continues through the steps teaching us to trust God–tell the truth and clean house.
Step 12 continues this growth by reminding us to practice the process in all our affairs, not just in the dependencies and addictions that drove us to the program in the first place, but in all areas of our lives.
Sharing this message with others keeps us honest and clean.  How can we give what we don’t have?
